Massive Fire Hits Ilwaco, Wash. Seafood Processing Facility
A massive fire that began on Jan 22. at the Ilwaco Landing seafood processing facility, a hub for Dungeness crab harvests, is under investigation, meanwhile leaving Safe Coast Seafoods as the lone fish-receiving facility in Ilwaco, a small Washington town near the Oregon border.

Commerce Department Allocates Millions of Dollars for Fishery Disasters
Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo has announced the allocation of over $42 million to address fishery disasters in among other places, Alaska, California, Oregon and the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe and Yurok Tribes fisheries from 2017 to 2023.

Supporters of the commercial fishing industry received some good news in late 2023 when the federal legislation known as H.R. 4618 –commonly called the Supporting Commercial Fishing in Port Infrastructure Projects Act – passed both the House and Senate as part of the Maritime Administration Reauthorization Act.

The legislation, introduced in mid-July and sponsored by Rep. Val Hoyle, D-Ore., was approved in mid-December and is expected to be signed into law by President Biden in the coming days.
