Ingalls delivers 10th national security cutter
The U.S. Coast Guard's newest Legend-class national security cutter, Calhoun (WMSL 759), recently departed from Ingalls Shipbuilding. The new cutter is scheduled for commissioning in 2024 and will be home-ported in Charleston, S.C., joining the cutters Hamilton, James, and Stone. Ingalls has delivered 10 Legend-class national security cutters to the Coast Guard, including Calhoun, and is continuing construction on the final ship in the class, Friedman.> READ MORE
Safety alert: By land or sea, firefighting preparation is key
The purpose of the U.S. Coast Guard marine safety alert is to "raise awareness within the Marine Transportation System to the unique dangers of shipboard fires, particularly on multi-level freight vessels like vehicle-carrying roll-on/roll-off ships." In July, a foreign-flagged ro-ro experienced a fire on one of its vehicle decks while cargo was being loaded dockside. With over 1,200 vehicles on board, the fire quickly spread out of control to the point where most firefighting efforts became ineffective.
Great Lakes Towing acquires former Cleveland fireboat
The Great Lakes Towing Co. has acquired Anthony J. Celebrezze, a fireboat formerly owned by the City of Cleveland. The purchase is intended to provide the company with a firefighting platform for response to a shipboard or shoreside fire, particularly in those ports where a high volume of winter ship repair work is performed. The company can also utilize the fireboat to respond to shipboard fires while a vessel is underway.
NTSB to hold public meeting on San Pedro Bay oil release
The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a virtual public board meeting Dec. 5 to determine the probable cause of a crude oil release that followed anchor strikes on an underwater pipeline in San Pedro Bay near Huntington Beach, Ca. On Oct. 1, 2021, crude oil began leaking from a crack that had developed in an underwater pipeline. The pipeline was shut down after oil was spotted on the surface of the water and an estimated 588 barrels of oil had leaked from the pipeline.
