MarAd Alert: Car carrier hijacked in Red Sea
The Bahamian-flagged M/V Galaxy Leader has been hijacked approximately 50 miles west of Hodeida, Yemen in the Red Sea. Mariner are urged to exercise caution when transiting this area. U.S. commercial vessels operating in this area should review U.S. Maritime Advisory 2023-011 for amplifying information and points of contact. The alert will automatically expire on Nov. 26.
EPA seeks to revise ballast water discharge requirements
The Environmental Protection Agency recently published a supplemental notice of proposed rulemaking in the Federal Register, requesting public comment on modifications to the agency's 2020 proposed rule implementing the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act. The law seeks to regulate a variety of discharges from commercial vessels, including ballast water discharges.
Chesapeake delivers new cat to American Cruise Lines
American Glory, the second new Coastal Cat to launch this year from American Cruise Lines (ACL), has been delivered by Chesapeake Shipbuilding after passing its sea trials. ACL accepted delivery of the 100-passenger small ship on time as scheduled from the Salisbury, Md., shipbuilder. American Glory is the newest ship in ACL's series of 12 new Coastal Cats. Additional ships in the series are under construction with the next two scheduled for delivery in 2024.
Polar Star departs for annual Antarctic resupply mission
The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Polar Star departed Seattle recently and is scheduled to transit to Antarctica in support of Operation Deep Freeze. Deep Freeze is an annual joint military mission to resupply the U.S. Antarctic stations in support of the National Science Foundation, the lead agency for the U.S. Antarctic Program.
Bollinger delivers sixth FRC to be based in Boston
Bollinger Shipyards has delivered USCGC Melvin Bell to the U.S. Coast Guard in Key West, Fla. This is the 181st vessel the shipbuilder has delivered to the Coast Guard over a 35-year period and the 55th fast response cutter (FRC) delivered under the current program.
The U.S. Coast Guard, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the French Marine Casualty Investigation Authority have conducted an evidence review of recovered Titan submersible debris in Newport, R.I. Titan and the five men aboard were lost on June 18 during a deep dive in the North Atlantic to view the wreck of the liner Titanic.
